TOOTH EXTRACTION PROCEDURE

An extraction is an oral surgery procedure where the entire tooth (crown, root & periodontal ligament) is removed from the socket in the bone.  At Michigan Implants & Periodontics, we extract all types of teeth (fractured, root canal treated, wisdom, impacted and baby teeth)! We also ensure our patients heal well post-operatively by utilizing platelet-rich fibrin and ozone in the extraction sockets.

TYPES OF EXTRACTIONS

Simple extractions are performed on teeth that can be seen in the mouth and do not require sectioning of the tooth or incising the gums for access. These extractions are performed under local anesthesia. The doctor will loosen the tooth and ligament with an elevator instrument and use forceps to extract the tooth. 

Surgical extractions are performed on teeth that are broken, severely infected or that cannot be seen easily. To remove the tooth, the doctor will have to pull back the gums to gain access and visibility. Often the tooth needs to be sectioned with a surgical handpiece.  Surgical extractions are usually performed under local anesthesia and conscious sedation.
