SCALING & ROOT PLANING
WHAT IS SCALING & ROOT PLANING?
Periodontal scaling and root planing (SRP) is another term for a non-surgical professional deep dental cleaning performed when periodontal disease is diagnosed. The procedure involves using an ultrasonic device and special hand instruments to clean the roots below the gums. The procedure is painless because local anesthetic is used. The goal of the treatment is to remove the calculus (hardened plaque) build-up under the gums that you cannot reach with your toothbrush. SRP will also smooth the root surface and remove the diseased layer of cementum which will allow the gum tissue to reattach to the tooth.
Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. It only affects the gum tissue and is reversible if detected early. Gingivitis manifests as bleeding gums when brushing, flossing or even eating. If left untreated, this could potentially lead to periodontal disease which is when tartar buildup has caused gum infection.
Periodontal disease causes bone loss around the tooth resulting in the gum-line pulls away from the tooth and widens, and loss of this connective tissue. If periodontal disease is left untreated, the ultimate outcome is tooth loss.
SRP is the first stage of periodontal disease treatment. A deep cleaning of the teeth will help to manage the infection and encourage recovery. Preventing infection and inflammation anywhere in your body, including your gums, is vital for your overall health.
